Rumor: Sandy Bridge MacbookAir and Mac mini waiting on Lion to go GM
#11
Clearly there's something in Lion that Apple thinks is going to be an instant revenue source.

I just dropped $120 on eBay for a 2.33 Core 2 Duo upgrade chip for my 1.66 Core Duo Mini so I can have a bite of Lion.

(weekend project - never opened a Mini before)

Will that work? The chipsets between the Core Duo and the Core 2 Duo are still different. Truly curious as I sold my Core Duo Mac mini a few months back so that I can standardize on Lion.

Okay, I'll bite on another MBA, but a mini TOO?!

I just got the current flavor of mini a few months ago!

Ah well, I'm already thinking of ways to rationalize it.

I'll say it again--Thunderbolt is _the_ killer upgrade for a Mac Mini--let's you easily add a RAID and get the benefit of the speed increase.

Apparently it will. Good news for my CD2.0 BlackBook.

MacRumors: Mac OS X Lion *does* run on Core Duos/Core Solos

That is good news. Now I need my Core Duo Mac mini back! Wink

Wait, small roadblock. What are you going to do without the Finder and the slow performance since DP4?

That's alright. I got a dual core 64 bit atom system (NVIDIA ION platform), 4 GB max memory, even smaller form factor that should make a decent hackintosh platform. I'l give it a go. Fingers crossed that I can get Lion running later, but Snow Leopard is my target for now since I found out that Apple ditched Front Row in Lion.

I wanted to standardize on Lion, but I'll need to find a iTunes-->Front Row replacement for Lion. Plex perhaps?

Mac Mini Core Duo to Core 2 Duo: I'm banking that it can be done:

And the testimony in the comments here:

I know you can swap the chip, but I think the Lion system check will still invalidate your system for installation. Most likely you can work around it and hopefully with the new 64bit chip all the software will run correctly.

I'm keeping an eye on the progress.

Upgrade worked great! Not anywhere near as hard to take a Mini apart as I thought it would be.

Not noticing huge speed improvement either, though web pages load a bit faster. I suspect video conversion will improve.
