I thought 'bad behavior' affected alimony, not the property settlement.

Anecdotes are the worst sort of debate.

I've known 2 men who went "off the grid" and never paid a dime of child support, let alone alimony. Their kids never saw them because they wouldn't risk having to fork over any money. I bet their ex-wives wished they could go back in time and grab whatever they could before being left to raise the children all alone.

I am sick of hearing about grasping ex-wives when there are men all over this country who are equally selfish.

Agree with the idea. The person is what's rotten, not their role.
As for the thread, I'm not really following. All opinions are respected.

You probably missed the fact that I didn't use gender in my statement. The two cases I know personally were both the men trying to punish the women by getting additional child support, etc (the guys were the full time stay at home custodians after the women bailed on the relationship and the kids).
Good friend of mine is going through this now. She walked out on him on the way to work one morning, and now doesn't see why she should have to pay child support.

Sorry, Paul, I meant that as a kind of generic statement, not directed at you in particular. The "woman scorned" references, etc.

I haven't seen Richard Cory since ENC1101 (Freshman English). I still remember the assignment - 750 words minimum on the meaning of a 125 word poem.

As far as the check.. think of the fun of taking it to your bank drive-through.

Shortly before my wife and I were married we decided to buy a house. For a couple of reasons, it made sense to do it before we were married. She had savings, but no income. I had income but no savings. I checked the IRS gifting policy and found the limit that one person can gift another person, tax free, so long as it is reported on the correct form. She wrote me a check for that sum of money and in the memo field she wrote 'For Sex'. The woman at the bank depositing the check got quite a chuckle out of it and said "You must be pretty good.":ROTFL:
That was pretty good!

Regardless if it were a man or a woman in that position, how would your life be any better with a larger settlement than what was offered? Could two, three, or six billion more make a difference in your life?

I'm thinking I would just take the huge sum of cash, put this dark period behind me, and get on with my life without any more grief from the ex.

The ex had to borrow the money to cut that check. I wonder what sort of can of worms that would entail should he be unable to repay the loans?
