neophyte: The co-pilot had an apartment in Dusseldorf because he flew that route so often. So I think your suggestion unlikely.

There are other scenarios: a seizure that had the co-pilot performing irrationally; a passenger who some group or agency (of which co-pilot was a member) wanted out of the way; etc., etc.

But it looks most likely as if he was not mentally healthy.

The problem is the privacy rules preventing doctors from notifying employers of problems with people in critical public-safety positions. Difficult issue, maybe worth a separate thread.
