Last week, I was at the Costco in Mishawaka, IN. The checkout indicated ApplePay was accepted BUT, when I tried to use it, it didn't work. The cashier saw that I had a Discover Card linked to ApplePay and told me that Costco ONLY accepted Visa! I do have a Visa card; just NOT linked to ApplePay. I wonder if Apple is aware that vendors are adding their own restrictions?

Why would Apple care? Apple's arrangement is with banks, not merchants.
Costco accepts whatever card they choose to accept. You link whatever card you want to Apple Pay. As long as it's accepted by the merchant and the merchant accepts Apple Pay, you're golden.
Apple touts all the banks and CUs that are accepting AP but it's still the merchants' choice.
It would seem the AP token is not card agnostic.
Since the Watch and/or 'Phone can hold more than one card, you could try linking your Visa to AP, at least just to see if it works.

Last weekend I was at a museum and there was a vending machine there that accepted ApplePay. Great! My first chance to try and use it. I couldn't figure it out. I'm waving my phone by the coin slot. Tapping it against the vending machine. Looking like a d00sh. LOL. I ended up putting 2 dollar bills in the slot and got 2 quarters as change. Maybe I was holding it wrong? I gave up.

I've wanted to try a soda vending machine that used Apple Pay, but they want $1.50 for a soda, and I just can't abide.
So I have no idea where the secret reader may be.
And one day, I want to try the 'Phone. I had no idea how to go about in and had to look it up. Apparently the process starts when the 'Phone is held near the reader and the screen displays some AP message/acknowledgement?
Maybe one day.
