I had a murder two HOUSES away from me. Perpetrator may have walked through my back yard to get to the house. Apparently, a high school kid was looking for drug money from a "friend" who was at school. Step dad was sleeping in that morning and when the perp broke down the back door came to see what was going on. A gun was fired and the step dad was killed. They got the kid who "the street" believed was the perpetrator, but eventually he walked free. He had been in the home before so finger prints could not be linked to the day of the murder.
Family moved a few months later. This was the third dysfunctional family in that house in a row, starting with the original owner.
Did you guys tell the new people that moved in? "Hi neighbor, you live in the dysfunctional house."

there was a police standoff on my block a few years ago during the summer, about 4 doors down on the backside of my block. A police Explorer K9 suv was camped out in my backyard. When they used a flash bang, it REALLY got my attention. The guy had already offed himself. Was holed up in his uncle's house after an armed robbery.
On a positive note, I let several police use our downstairs bathroom while their dogs wattered up from my Brita pitcher. Decent officers, both 2 and 4 legged kind.

Unfortunately, this kind of thing can happen almost anywhere. A guy was shot, for no good reason, by a kid doing a robbery one house from us about a year ago. He died a few days later in the hospital. He was a young father from out of town, waiting for an Uber car after a wedding reception a the nearby country club.
We've got off-duty police doing patrols, not full time, but regularly.
Police found the kid, age 17, who did it, along with the guy who was driving him. Good work by the police, but a tragedy all around. The kid's life is also likely over, for all practical purposes.
Good luck.
