Hard to say at the moment if they are going to be a lost generation, or computer implants will herald a new stage in our evolution. In the 90's there was a Twilight Zone where 99.99% of the population had implants and couldn't even read paper books. Society was almost destroyed when the implants were taken over by a virus, but the few people without them allowed it to restart.
Yes, I've seen that episode. Used to be if a student had a phone or pager in school they would be expelled (on suspicion of drug dealing). I am of the opinion that now a phone may be allowed in the building, but only to be kept in a locker, unless there is a specific invitation from a teacher to allow it into the classroom.

Phones get checked in before start of class, checked out at the end of class at my teacher spouse's school.

That may work at the primary or secondary school level, but no way is it going to work in college...
