what do they do when the problem is the drive?

An acquaintance twice had problems with the HD on his laptop. Dell just sent the replacement. I assume that'd be more economical than paying a technician to fix the problems.
Is anyone here concerned about personal privacy when you have to send in your Mac for repair?

I don't know why they require it, but taking the HD out of a typical Apple laptop is much harder than taking the drive out of a Dell.

It could be that if the problem is not HD related, they do not want to worry about the drive getting damaged in transit and getting sued for data loss.

Batteries weigh a lot. I bet they save a bit on shipping if you leave them out.

batteries can be considered hazardous cargo in some instances, but I would doubt that reason in this case. in short, i don't know...
