PDF tip of the day: open password-protected PDF
#1
Please observe all laws pertaining to this subject...

Had a password-protected PDF from a client that we needed to extract a graphic. Screen cap didn't do the trick because of the nature of the graphic. Trying to open in Illustrator presents us with a password box (the client doesn't know the password). In some googling, I discover that you can open the PDF in the ColorSync Utility found in OS X, re-save, then open in illustrator or your PDF editor of choice. Just got the graphic and we're on our way.

thought I'd pass it along

there is an app called PDF Key that will bypass a password protected PDF. But its not free.

Doesn't work for me... maybe because my test PDF file only has text, and no images? The file I get after opening in ColorSync Utility and saving to the desktop is in fact a PDF file. It's just a blank white PDF file.

try a "save as" from within the utility, maybe?

Seems to only apply to raster images.

If I recall correctly, Graphic Converter will ditch the password on some protected PDFs. It's been a long time since I tried it though.

I wonder how well File Juicer would work in this situation.

Edit:
This page answers it.

Encrypted PDF files
Are not searched or decoded by File Juicer. If the PDF allow printing you can print to PDF and juice that one instead. Otherwise you need a PDF password recovering utility.
