Wikipedia is a great quick reference, but I wouldn't state my career or even a minor bet on the validity of its content. Your quote provides an excellent illustration of the dangers of relying on the validity of Wiki information.

I looked at the Wiki article you quote, and you quoted it accurately. However, the quote allegedly draws its support from an article about the history of offside referenced in footnote 27. Interestingly, it would make more sense to reference the actual FIFA rule directly. Nonetheless, the article does reference FIFA Rule 11, which defines "offside."

I'm not going to quote the rule here; it's rather legalistic. However, suffice to say that my explanation is more accurate than the Wiki explanation, and my explanation definitely applies to the Spanish WC goal.
