Any reason to get something other than iPhone 2G for Tmobile?

Have you considered getting the 3GS and going with AT&T's 200 MB, $15 3G data plan? That combined with the 450 min calling plan works out to $55 a month+tax.

How does that price compare to the T-mobile Edge data plan you are considering?

You can get a 3GS for $250 on CL and stay contract free if that is a concern.

I'm stuck with Tmobile for the foreseeable future (contract), so actually switching to ATT is not an option.

The GPS has nothing to do with T-Mobile. So it will work in things like Google maps and standalone GPS apps even when you are using the iPhone on T-Mobile.

Best I could live with is $99/m

I've got more time and unlimited messages plus 2G Net on TMobile for ~$50.

You plan on tethering your 2G connection on T-Mobile?!? Smile If not, take $20 off that proposed AT&T monthly bill.

I actually don't use the internet that much on my iPhone on T-Mobile. I use less than 10MB a month over EDGE. Of course, the flaw with AT&T's $15 for 200MB plan is that with actual 3G service, I might use the data much more often (which is why I got an AT&T SIM before the new data plans took effect and will actually be switching to the iPhone 4 and AT&T next month).

I'm grandfathered in and have a AAA discount, so your mileage will vary

TMob:

300 minutes with unlimited weekends
500 texts
Edge (T-zones which is no longer available)
$38 all in.

Unlimited calling, messaging, and data (tethering unofficially included) is $79.99 on T-Mobile Even More Plus. No contract and cheaper monthly rate, but the iPhone does not support T-Mobile 3G bands.

Exactly. the best ATT could match would be $140/m. Buying a phone outright at $600 would pay for itself in
... 7 months!

Yep. I have T-Mobile and brought my own unlocked Nokia e72 to the plan. I don't get to use 3G, but I retain EDGE, WiFi, and GPS access. Seems like a fair tradeoff.
