Fascinating... As a youth, I was told I might 'go Blind' by the time I was 40. So I was rather fascinated by the idea, and spent time and energy learning to walk with my eyes tightly shut, maneuver in the dark, etc... The fascination made caving rather easy, but one dark night I tried 'echo location' in a city raquetball court after the lights failed.

And discovered that I could actually hear and predict the location of the ball about 50% of the time by emitting an off-tune whistle. My friends were astonished to hear me hitting the ball every other time.

I personally think it's a great thing to teach the Blind.

That would be a good skill to have.
And bless you for doing it with a whistle & not one of those annoying clickers.

In response to the OP: Yes, I learned to do this some time in my early teens. I still practice every once in a while - it's a handy skill. One benefit is that it is impossible for my wife to sneak up on me, at least when we are at home.
