So you've still not experienced SSD booting on any of your macs?
Oh, I have! Some time ago I asked if a G5 iMac could handle Leopard. The answer was "Yes" so I tried with a VST FW external, probably 5400rpm. It was faster than my internal 7200rpm HD, with was very nearly full, and had several upgrades-in-place, no fresh installs. So I said OK, Leopard it is. Then I got my 120G Extreme SSD, put it in a Macally box, split it in two, and used it on my G5 iMac and mini. It was a thing of beauty. Now I'll repartition it and make it One with the iMac. And then I may make it and the iMac, One, internally. I've got my 24" iMac to deal with, but it will have a external SSD. I'm very likely not to crack it open.

buy the bracket for the Mac Pro. It's only like $20.
I got OWC's 240GB a couple of months ago... am tempted to get this for my aging Macbook. But I'll probably hold out, as I don't really need a 256GB drive on the Macbook. When a 128GB SSD (OWC or Crucial) gets well below $100, I'll get one.

Exactly. You can easily do this, with these (Crucial) drives, and they will 'hold' just fine in the Mac Pro. If you want to get a harness later, fine, but you can just leave it plugged in without anything or if you want to add a little bit of underneath support, just put something underneath it (e.g. hard foam, etc.). I have a couple of these just like this in some Mac Pro servers. I do have harnesses, but since never used them since the drives just sat so well in there.

from one of the reviews on the amazon link from the OP:
"Regarding TRIM: While I was running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, TRIM was listed as disabled. I've heard it was because only Apple-branded SSDs will turn on TRIM, but there is software floating around to enable TRIM support. I chose not to run the software because I didn't know the developer but it could be perfectly fine. I ended up upgrading to Lion 10.7 (now 10.7.3) and TRIM is still listed as disabled. Someone in the comments below mentions to search "enable trim mactrast" and follow the directions to enable TRIM. I followed the directions on the site and now TRIM is supported. TRIM is important for wear leveling and to prevent a decrease in speed overtime and the directions take all of 2 minutes to follow so it's highly recommended." when i look at OWC's site, there is a blurb about TRIM that is built in their drives.. "My MacBook Pro supports 6Gb/s SATA out of the box, and although the System Profiler does not show TRIM support, this is not an issue, as the OWC SSDs have TRIM support built-in." article with TRIM blurb from OWC blog Im hoping OWC could expand on this difference and the value added/subtracted from either OWC's solution or a third party solution. |
