Do I have to pay for Mountain Lion twice?
#11
Like the others said, you need to log into the same iTunes account on the other computer to download ML. Then before you launch the installer, make a copy of the Install OS X Mountain Lion application. It will be in your Applications folder. The installer deletes itself automatically when finished.

I eventually burned the application to a DVD. Unless you have a dual-layer DVD, it is not possible to make a ML boot disk. You must use a 8 GB flash drive or external hard drive to have something that is bootable.

Make sure it is on the same iTunes account as the original Mac

I installed it on three macs, after you log into the app store the "$19.99" changes into "Install".
this is my experience with Lion, and with other Apps as well. I don't see why ML would be any different. Just make sure you do use the same App store account

Get Lion_DiskMaker2rc3.zip

Donationware that will strip the Installer.dmg from the 10.8 download. Once you have the Installer.dmg as a separate file on your desktop, burn said file to a DVD or USB stick (8GB).

I have been on my newer iMac and logged into my one and only iTunes account and it does not show up in purchased and when I go to ML it still says "Buy App". I did not click it as I did not want to buy it again and I can not remember if there was another step after you click Buy It.

Maybe after I click Buy It, it will give me another option????

I downloaded and then copied the Installer Mountain Lion ESD onto a USB drive an a couple of places on two HDs.

But if the Installer has to contact the mothership for activation, this may not make any difference.

If it's done the same as Lion, you can Right-Click/Control-Click, open the package contents, and copy the ESD. No 'ware needed, and a borderline scam, unless it also helps one burn to disk. And still...

Yes, if you haven't entered your password in the last 15min, it will require it. You would have see the Buy It change to Install, by then.

After downloading the Install .dmg but before installing, remove the Install Mountain Lion ESD.dmg from the Installer and save/copy it to another location.

Right-Click/Ctrl-Click/Two-finger Tap on the Installer > Show package contents

Ok, it worked.

I clicked Buy It, then it asked me to enter my password and then it said you have already purchased this app, click ok to downloard it for free.

Download is in process......43 minutes to go...

Essentially, your app store apps on all your computers have to be connected to the same dot mac account or ML won't show as downloadable.

Also, as long as you copy ML from your apps folder before you open to install, for example, copy it to your desktop, you will have an "extra" copy. If you want a bootable copy rather than the entire dmg, then extract the ESD file mentioned above.

If you didn't copy ML to another location before running it from the apps folder, then yes, it's gone. But you can still redownload it from the app store - just go back in on the machine you downloaded on originally, open the app store app, and click on purchases. Then redownload and use the copy method to take it to another computer*…

Exactly.

I found this in a MacWorld article, this instruction.

I'd done it with Lion, too.

Often, it's for users that want to put it on a thumb drive, for a bootable plug in.
