The new Preview and / or OS requires more oomph than anything related to 10.6. My Late '13 MBP has no problem with 150MB PDFs.

That could be it. In the forums I didn't pay much attention to what machines were being used.

Maybe I'll start another thread about the value of adding more RAM (I have 10 GB) and a faster video card to this machine. That would be about $450. Normally I'd be OK doing that, but my buddy just bought a machine identical to mine for only $550.

But in the meantime, thank goodness this workaround works. This was probably my biggest disappointment of the upgrade.
