Depending on where you live, give it some time. We have trees that show no sign of life yet but that will leaf out in a few weeks.

Maybe, maybe not. We are several weeks behind with trees/plants blooming. They're just getting started for some reason. Plus, we have one tree in the side yard that looks barren and dead every year. All the other trees have sprouted new leaves, then, a few weeks later, this particular tree comes to life. It's the same MO every year with this guy.

as it stands (or not...), the tree is "mostly dead." I have had many plants come back after being mostly dead, but I usually prune them back rather severely. in essence, that is the question here: do I prune like a madman and then nurture it back to life or do I hope for something from it's current state.

Not even buds or anything? The tree branches are barren of buds/leaves/flowers for half the year? What a slow poke. There's a tree in my backyard that is just budding now. But at least that's a sign of life. So I'll keep it around for a bit. I think it's a dogwood. Not too sure.

I think we're gonna need a pic. LOL So wait you're thinking of severely pruning a barely alive "semi-dwarf" cherry tree? Where are you located? It depends on your climate. If you're down south where it's nice and warm 9 months out of the year with sun and rain. It might have a chance of springing back and leading a long and full life. But if you're in the north, just get a new one. More mature if possible.

Absolutely no signs of life at all. Seriously, the first few years I lived here, I started the season thinking I would have to cut it down. But it always comes to life. It's some kind of poplar, but we have bunches of those that are way ahead of this one. I probably have 200 trees on my property and this is the only one that does that.
