After looking at it more closely, I'm going with kahuna. The butterfly bush has a tubular flower and the bird cherry has a flat 5 petal flower like all members of the rose family which includes cherries. It has a trunk too about 2" in diameter at the base. Our plant also seems to have been around for a while...
The link says it's in eastern Europe but I'll assume they've been brought here as ornamentals.
