The RFID chip can be transferred from an old key shell to a new one, if you have the old key. I looked at doing this for a 2003 Audi key, but was instead able to just replace the button pads with those from an aftermarket key shell.
But of course if you lost the key, you're probably stuck with getting one from the dealer. We had to do this too, as the car only came with one key, and I really wanted a backup.
