These are steam heated radiators, so they get up above 200 degrees F. And they are ugly to the contemporary eye--or at least to my and my wife's eyes.
Although, I stripped about 3/8" of paint off one, and there was really quite a bit of elegant tracery and molding. I did a bit of research, and radiators were very advanced technology from maybe 1890 to 1920 or so, and apparently it was quite swank to have radiators, so they came with fancy designs cast into the metal....

But I will ask, why? Are they dangerous to the touch, do they burn? I honestly don't know.
If they aren't dangerous, they sure are charming to look at. To me, they appear to be functional antiques.
