Belt or chain garage door opener?
#11
We've had both and the belt is a bit quieter. But, we never had a problem with either. I replaced an old chain one when a local Sears went out of business and were selling higher-end openers pretty cheap.

Chain drive will easily outlast a belt drive by decades IMHO.

My old Genie worm drive garage door opener lost some threads on the limgvworm drive. About an 1”, missing on worm gear. So it gets to that point on the worm drive and goes noisy and stops.

Guy at Home Depot said the Genie are made outside USA now and was pointing me to their other brand , Chamberlain. I assume it shouldn’t be to hard to drop old and install new.

Will stick with 1/2 HP as door is metal slide up, not heavy wooden.

So belt or chain?

I've had worm, chain (2) and now belt. Two years ago I installed (at 81 years old) a Chamberlain unit and couldn't be more pleased. Besides the standard remote units,My Q.app for my iPhone can open and close it from wherever I am. I gave my daughters access using the app because we are gone 5 months of the year, and they sometimes need to borrow our 2nd car when theirs is in the shop. It was an easy installation; the mounting brackets were the same as the old unit so I just had to replace parts. I could even use the same sensor wiring.

My belt is on year 23 with no issues ever. Plus I have an oversized door so requires a longer belt.
