First cousins are somewhat more likely than unrelated parents to have a child with a serious birth defect, mental retardation or genetic disease, but their increased risk is nowhere near as large as most people think, the scientists said. Is a couple of percent enough risk to discourage first cousins from having children? I don't think there is an objective way to determine that. I think it is worth making sure the first cousins are aware of the amount of risk but I think the risk is low enough that I would leave it to them to decide.

There is a significant statistical chance that a woman over 35 will have a child with downs syndrome, should they not be allowed to marry or bare children? I think a great deal of this has to do with the "ick" factor. I find it interesting as my parents were second cousins (my maternal grandmother and paternal great-grandmother were sisters). That may explain a great deal about me though, add in that my mother was 42 when she had me and I'm surprised I'm not voting for Trump
