These navigation apps will do you the wonderful favor of saving 8 mins driving time on a 3 hour drive by detouring onto a local windy harrowing cliffside road to avoid sitting in some highway traffic. You're welcome. Hah!

I avoid the "faster detours", and just stay on the routes that I'm familiar with. And I often find that whatever they thought was causing a delay had actually been cleared up hours ago and there's no delay at all.
I totally get it, unfortunately, most people use navigation apps on routes that are unfamiliar to them. Once one gets past a 50 mile or so radius from their home, routes get hazy. In my experience Waze has so many active users in my region it's pretty spot on with real time delays and traffic. If one is going on a 150 mile road trip to the boonies (skiing). Good luck if you stray off the recommended route and it has to recalculate in a spotty cell zone in the mountains and valleys!

About a quarter of the way in, it put me on a gravel road. I thought WTF? I'm sure I had it set to "avoid unpaved roads". So I stopped and checked. I could find no such setting. I mean nowhere could I find a setting that had anything to do with unpaved roads.

With Google there may very well have been such a setting, and in typical Google fashion they later removed it. Or the option is only available in some versions of the app or on Google Chrome only. The other thing they do is have an easy to find option, and then bury it deep in some unobvious menu tree.

Waze was great until Google bought them. Went down hill fast afterwards.
