do you like posed shots or candid? Make sure their style matches what you want.

Oh, and ask if they have more than one SLR camera. Seriously, some "pros" put all their $ into one expensive body and lenses and forget to have a backup flash or body etc.

My advice would be for you to pick out who you think you want to use for the wedding, using any of the above advice, then have your engagement photos done by them. This gives you the opportunity to can them and get someone different if they turn out awful. This happened to me. Our 2nd choice turned out great. Definitely plan on getting the wedding shots before the actual wedding (right before is best).

amen. Pros have back-ups. Their job is to anticipate failures and make provisions for unseen circumstances. All it takes is one tipsy groomsman to knock over a tripod set-up and you are screwed.
