Buy a new scanner or pay for VueScan?

The only thing that gives me pause is that vuescan is more expensive than a new scanner.

only the pro version. but that extra $40 goes toward future proofing. new scanner support is constantly being added. new OSes are added as they come out.

Just bought Vuescan a couple of weeks ago for my Epson 3200. Happy with it so far.

RESOLUTION of the scanners pretty much flattened out several years back, but the dynamic range has continued to improve on the better scanners.

I'd look into a refurb from the Epson outlet on-line. Full warranty.

I picked up VueScan right after the switch to 10.1 - because my Minolta SCSI film scanner had no drivers. As a bonus, it also handled the old SCSI flatbed.

Since then, VueScan has flawlessly supported every scanner I've plugged in - including an HP all-in-one printer that came with my daughter's iMac.

The process is better than built-in Twain support. Under OSX, you scan in VueScan while editing in Photoshop (or whatever) while printing in another window.

Well worth the price.

which is typically of concern only for negative or slide scanning.
