I'm pretty good at spotting non-period stuff in period films-- didn't catch anything in this one.

Except for the buildings in the background during Milk's speech from the steps of City Hall.... They could have, but didn't, digitally alter the skyline to reflect the buildings of the period. Not really van Sant's style to worry that much about minor details, though. He's more a theme than a detail artist.

I also saw the film at the Castro theatre in SF when i was there last week. It was the perfect venue, and the popcorn there is great!

I want my money back!!!

I was wondering about the sort of final scene though-- is the opera house really directly across from city hall?

When Clint Eastwood is leaving City Hall in the original "Dirty Harry" you can see the old skyline. City Hall is dazzling now but it was fairly dingy looking then. The State Building (to the north) now has a larger addition built behind it that fits it well. The Asian Museum directly across the plaza was the main Library. The London Plane trees are of course the ones Donald Sutherland shocked Veronica Cartwright in "Body Snatchers."

I watched them filming "Milk" in that space and can say that Van Sant welcomed just about anyone that wanted to be a part of the shoot.

The Opera House is directly to the west of City Hall, across the street (behind it).

I wasn't in the movie, I have to go to the State Building a lot and the Grant Building a couple of blocks away from there and I just watched them shoot scenes. But they invited people to become extras and lots did.

These are the trees that extend across the plaza from City Hall - in "Body Snatchers" - towards the Asian Arts Museum (former city library) and the New Library to the south of it (the Angels in the movie "City of Angels) rested in the interior of the new library in the movie.)

SF Main Library - from "City of Angels"
