Thanks pRON.
PRON (or anyone else who knows): what's the successor to the rebel XT, and when is it coming out?

I have a 20D and can testify to it's niceness. I also have a D70 and it doesn't feel like a step down (the 20D is better though, albeit slightly). For all practical purposes, they're the same. I don't know one mom (here in the 7 million strong bay area) with a 20D (a couple with a Rebel), so I doubt that it could be considered a staple. I can't imagine why anyone would spend so much to take a picture of junior at karate practice. I think a talented professional like pRON can truly discern the differences between these machines (not to mention the photo nerds on dpreview with their bugs and flowers), but joe and jane blow probably just need to get the Oly E-500 two lens kit for $699 at Costco and call it a day. For half the price, they get a camera and lenses that are 95 percent as nice at the 20D.

I typically see the 20D at all sorts of events now with parents that will spent crazy amounts to get pics of jr. high and high school aged athletes with the 70-200 2.8 to boot. The 20D's ISO 1600 and 3200 are typically what they are looking for. That's something the other cameras near that price segment have not addressed yet. Any type of action and low light with the right lenses the 20D is still alone in that $1k price range. The Nikon D200 has shown up but $1699 gets you the body only. You can almost get a 20D and a 70-200 2.8 non IS for the price of the D200. About $400 more. Other than that, yes, most of the entry and mid levels take care of most people needs.

I'll tell you pRON, I am amazed at what parents will spend. It all seems so excessive. They're willingness to take on debt baffles me. They think that every moment of their kid's lives must be preserved.
