You say that it's a repeatable event, that at a specific point in the install/update process things go wonky, so what step did you take immediately preceding that point?

Also, when "Disk Utility not being able to see any drives" occurs, does the Disk Utility display a spinning beach ball cursor or does it otherwise appear to be functioning normally and let you click buttons to make disk images and such?

I think the real deal here is you shouldn't need to troubleshoot a browser upgrade. That seems to be what's happening in Safari 4xx.

Fixing Apple mistakes isn't my job, that's why I switched to Camino. If Camino breaks I'll go to iCab or whatever works, I won't spend my time doing what they are paid to do.
