Well, if you've already done The Day the Earth Stood Still, definitely include Forbidden Planet, and if there's time, The Thing from Another World. (Doesn't everyone need familiarity with B&W sf & monster movies to be culturally literate?) 
How about some Preston Sturges? Sullivan's Travels would be great, especially if he's ever seen the Coen's O Brother Where Art Thou.
