Just be aware that you can't slap the G Nikkors on older film nikons that don't support the G type setup or else you can't control the aperture....

Just for the record, this lens is USM but it's not the better type of USM so it's a little slower*. Still a great lens but it can't quite keep up with something like an 85/1.8.
(* The huge and massively expensive 50/1.0 USM and 85/1.2 USM are butt slow. The 50/1.4 USM is only a little slow.) I paid the price for that slower AF on this touchdown where it couldn't quite keep up. The picture still works but the focus is back towards his legs. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09326/101...sports.xml http://www.theonlycolors.com/photos/mult...e-2/410041 But it was a night game so the 24-105/f4 I usually use in that situation was too slow (aperture not AF speed).

In fact, just a week or so mine become completely silent after I pulled out the camera it was attached to by mistake. The camera dropped 3 ft. to the ground --- on carpet --- but on its nose and the lens broke into 2 pieces AND fell off the camera.

Sell the lens As Is on ebay and I bet you will find a buyer for at least $30.

Check out the very thorough DPReview review http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/cano...p8_ii_c16/. I think its is quite the ticket for many people. The thing that has kept me from buying it is reports of harsh bokeh at wide apertures. Wide aperture background blurring and fast nighttime shooting (with lots of specular highlights) are really the only reason I would want it, so I guess that's a dealbreaker since I have the very sharp 17-55 f/2.8 IS. The 50mm f/1.4 is nice, but it is very un-sharp at wide apertures, so if one already has a sharp f/2.8 50mm option it is less appealing. If you're into deal-hunting, Wal-Mart sells both these lenses and is currently offering 15% cash back with Bing.

Looks like walmart has raised Bing cashback to 20%,. Even after tax that is the best deal around for the 50/1.4 right now. Unfortunately, they've upped prices on many things, including the 50/1.2--crazy they even carry it-- and 70-200 f/4, so the end prices isn't really a deal.

A little late getting back to this thread but I'd like to give everyone a big *thank you* for your information and answering my question. I hadn't considered focus time differences between lenses and since I'm quite happy with the times from the kit lenses I'll count my blessings there.
I'll probably pick up the 50mm f/1.8 as it's just so inexpensive and I can live with some AF noise— my previous cameras were by no means silent. Over to DPReview for continuing education… |
