Well, no joy after replacing the battery. I took a $1.99 gamble (and a much bigger one disassembling my iMac to replace it).
Apple is NOT KIDDING when they say this is not a user-replaceable item. Removing the front cover and the LCD wasn't too difficult (when the Apple Store techs replaced the power supply, they apparently just slit the foil tape around the LCD rather than replacing it). But even then, the battery is located underneath the logic board. I took my time and used the utmost care every step of the way, but it now not only won't start up, but it powers down a few seconds after hitting the button.
I carefully took it apart a second time to be sure that all the connections and delicate cables were intact, but the result is unchanged. I guess I need to take ajakeski's comment as a positive and be happy I got the mileage out of it that I did.
