But it is ok on March 17 to dress up like a leprechaun, drink green beer, have a parade and wave the Irish flag? Stinko Patrick's Day?

You are bring up a good point, kanesa. I have wondered about it too. Why is it that people call themselves "Irish", wear Irish attire and even wave Irish flag and no one is bothered by it? Here are the reasons as I see them,

- The Irish(Germans, Italians, etc)wholeheartedly embraced this country. The fled their homeland. They had no designs on their newly adopted home. I do not recall Germans or Italians demand signs in their languages. When they left their country, they knew what they were leaving behind. They were leaving where they grew up, family, friends, language, customs etc. So much so that they would not think twice about picking up a rifle and fight a war in their homeland. And they did. I can relate to that. This is unthinkable for the current generation of Mexican immigrants. Going to war with Mexico? At the same time that they desperately seek citizenship, they wave the Mexican flag. Among certain circles you hear claims on the land, that it was unjustly taken from them and that they will get it back, if not by force but by cultural transformation and politics.

Let me hasten to add that I am not at all convinced that the majority of Mexican immigrants feel that way. It is just that what is orchestrated on TV by activists makes it appear that way. Few years ago there were demonstrations against bilingual education in the California public schools. Who were the demonstrators? The parents themselves. I think it was Ronald Reagan who once said that Hispanics are conservatives, they just don't know it. The message of the Republican party is extremely attractive to all immigrants, those who often packed up couple of bags and headed to a future of complete uncertainty. Find one Democrat who champions that kind of life story.

The only problem is that the GOP does not want "those people" in their group (except for political gain).

Geez, more Reagan references. Were you even in the US when he was president? It seems that every year that goes by, his failures get diminished and his accomplishments get greater.

Here are some quotes to chew on (and yes, your man Ronnie said them all):

"A tree's a tree. How many more do you need to look at?" -- Ronald Reagan (Governor of California), quoted in the Sacramento Bee, opposing expansion of Redwood National Park, March 3, 1966

"All the waste in a year from a nuclear power plant can be stored under a desk." --Ronald Reagan (Republican candidate for president), quoted in the Burlington (Vermont) Free Press, February 15, 1980

"It's silly talking about how many years we will have to spend in the jungles of Vietnam when we could pave the whole country and put parking stripes on it and still be home by Christmas." --Ronald Reagan (candidate for Governor of California), interviewed in the Fresno Bee, October 10, 1965

"...the moral equal of our Founding Fathers." --President Reagan, describing the Nicaraguan contras, March 1, 1985

"Fascism was really the basis for the New Deal." --Ronald Reagan, quoted in Time, May 17, 1976

"...a faceless mass, waiting for handouts." --Ronald Reagan, 1965. (Description of Medicaid recipients.)

"Unemployment insurance is a pre-paid vacation for freeloaders." --California Governor Ronald Reagan, in the Sacramento Bee, April 28, 1966

"We were told four years ago that 17 million people went to bed hungry every night. Well, that was probably true. They were all on a diet." --Ronald Reagan, TV speech, October 27, 1964

Thanks for the collection. I like most of them. Some of them are actually funny, and true. I might use them in my signature.
