My eleven year old has mostly abondoned her favorite stuffed toy. The one where she would not sleep unless she had it with her. We have many brave and harrowing tales about having to find it when it went missing.
The smell is the most important thing. She would get very mad if we washed it, so we stopped trying several years ago. She would huff it like it was a bag of model glue. Now it sits alone and forgotten. Every now and then she'll pick it up and you'll see her transported to a point in time where she was a happy toddler. But now it's all boys and nail polish. We'll keep the toy in a safe place, as we know that it will evoke feelings again someday. Feelings that we seem to forget are very important.
