Try a SMC reset.

The FW ports on a Mac can be temporarily disabled if there's a surge. If that occurs then a SMC reset will bring them back.

I think it's simply a complete power off, i.e. disconnect the FireWire cable, unplug the power to the computer and wait a few minutes.
Pulling the power cord resets the SMC on several Macs, but not all.

No, I was referring to the polyfuse in the FireWire PHY. Sorry about the ambiguous statement.

Resetting a polyfuse (polyswitch) just requires complete de-energizing for a few minutes.

Even if you did NOT buy AppleCare at the time you purchased your unit, you'd have nothing to lose by going to an Apple Store and offering to buy it now. Sometimes they'll allow it.

Too late... 12/2012 when I bought it for myself.

Even PAST the usual time for purchasing AC (ie: out of regular warranty but, still within the AC period), I've seen at least one Apple Genius allow a customer to sign up for AC so that a repair was covered. I don't know the details, just something I overheard while in an Apple Store.
