tracking down 866 number
#1
How? I'd like to figure out what company left a message in the form of a recorded message on my answering machine. First part of message was cut off because the "caller" began yammering during the outgoing message. I'd prefer not to call the number. Pretty sure it's a scam or sales pitch of some sort.

Are there any free reverse lookup sources/services aside from the obvious ones that come up in a Google search?

Just Google it in every form (ie parentheses, dashes, spaces)....

If those had worked, I wouldn't be asking for more search tips…

Seems like the only way to find out is to shell out way more than it's worth to me to one of those annoying we-know-but-we-won't-tell-until-you-give-us-$15 services.

Go to pay phone, call number, ask questions.

Brilliant! I am ashamed to acknowledge that I hadn't thought of that.

If it is bogus or one of those scams, the phone company will probably block the call before it goes through.

You probably already know, but they will get your number if you call from home. i carry scraps of paper with 800 numbers in my wallet to see who they are from a payphone, but I never get around to doing it.
