I guess all these "new Apple TV" threads mean passing on the open box gen 3 for $65ish was a good idea. Always nice to have validation.

It can always come in handy. Here's your validation: $59.99 after rebate at Adormama.

Ah, thanks.

M A V I C - I gave up on a 'DVR' as a keep component. If I get the data when I want to from the web, why should I bother to record it?

Can you get it all legally? Plus I might just want to time shift a game by an hour or two. What's an easy source to, for example, find a NFL game a couple hours after it's aired? Is it a legal one? Does it allow me to skip ads?

My fault, $56ish open box, I can't do math. That brand new after rebate deal is still pretty sweet.

Probably not.

Perhaps that's my problem - I'm trying to be legit with my content choices. A DVR is a great solution to that. For example, when my daughter was first born I upgraded my HTPC to have a 4TB HD, and got something other than the basic limited plan from Comcast. Then I recorded a ton of series I don't normally watch. When the promo price was over, I cancelled. Six months later, there's still plenty of content on there that I am watching. It'll probably last me at least another six months.

Completely understand. Is Windows still the way to go for easy HTPC builds? Cable card and the whole nine?

I honestly don't know. There may be other stuff that's better now. But I do still use a Windows HTPC, running 8.1 now, with Media Center and a cable card. I only run two tuners, but that's enough.
