Good article. Thanks!
We're about ready to purchase a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport and need to decide which color. I was avoiding black and white to begin with, but this seals the deal. The other colors are, basically, two shades of grey, silver, two shades of blue, copper and red.

. . . I agree that black or dark blue vehicles look very sharp when perfectly clean. The rest of the time they look ugly as heck and are horribly uncomfortable to get into (or touch the exterior of) in a sunny climate. For that reason I always rule them out completely when buying a car. That definitely makes it tough for the used car buyer (which I have been very recently) because black has been the main color pushed by the dealerships as the "cool color to have" for the last decade.

Yes, it's amazing how few car colors are popular (or common): silver, white, burgundy, and black, and for large SUVs, especially black. Chevy Suburban owners seem to prefer black, which to me makes the cars look like hearses, or else the Secret Service, which may be why it's so popular. After my white (another story) van rusted away, I wanted to find a large used SUV, so I was delighted when I came across the 2013 dark metallic green Expedition in the Ford dealer's lot (the only other one he had was black).

I really like the dark green, though in some lights it looks almost black. In bright sun it's quite pretty, and there are few of them—I've seen only one other since we bought it in the summer of 2014. It's probably as heat-absorbent as black, but we live in New England, so who cares? And I had a sun-roof installed (I wanted a car big enough to tote grandkids, and a convertible, so that was my compromise), which I open up on a hot day. If you get a black car, get a sun roof!

You mean they still make black and white cars? I thought they were all adjectivized now: pearl super white, ebony glossy black, etc.

I just washed/waxed my '93 black truck. For me, it's either black or white. I love a black vehicle, just not black interior.
