I don't know what caused the original problem, but today I finally called Apple support and we discovered that the Verizon person had made a mistake while controlling the computer. Fixing that unleashed the emails finally. What is strange is that the verizon tech had changed the user name and replacing it with the original name (which was there when things weren't working before) got everything working again.
Anyway, email returned to normal.
I did update to the latest El Cap which my friend had not done. Maybe that helped.
Seems like a lot of people have had problems with El Cap email, and at least one of them said he solved the problem by updating to 10.11.4.
