On the receiving device:
iOS:
Settings: Messages: Send & Receive: enter a unique address for that device
macOS:
Messages: Preferences: Accounts: You can be reached for messages at: check a unique address for that device
When sending, send to the appropriate device address.
Hm, will look at this tomorrow. I appreciate the help!
this is a good idea, but in practice, it will likely not work exactly in the way you want it to....think separate message threads on your devices to/from the same person. That gets old fast, and I guarantee there will be situations where you think you're sending to the right one but you aren't. "Why didn't you reply to my message?"..."I never got it! You sent it to my X device." On the iPhone, you can't de-select the phone number as a recipient for messages to that device. Not a problem necessarily. But if you have 3 devices, then you'll need two other iCloud accounts (one for each device).
And what about other people who send you messages? What if their messages just get sent to a single device (you iPad, for instance). What if you want to reply to them on your phone, but just can't find their message? The different threads of messages gets to be a pain and you'll just go back to having all messages on all devices, because it's not worth the hassle to set it up otherwise.
Maybe you'll get it setup and working the way you want, so if you do, more power to you.
But hey, "It just works"
