I've gleaned quite a bit without signing up for ancestry.com, even the free trial. Discussion boards, personal websites and public archives can provide a lot, depending on the name. Probably works best with bigger families that have been in country for a century or two.

Familysearch.org and myheritage.com have a lot of the same stuff, sometimes more, and can be accessed for free. For anyone who has Ashkenazi Jewish roots, jewishgen.org is a gem.
Ancestry often has index entries for the stuff on these other services, in which case the original entries on the other services will likely have more complete information.
