Companies large and small will not put up employees who bring them public pain. The brand will always be worth more than the rest.

Favreau wanted her for the role; didn't audition anyone else.

For months, we’ve been reporting on the atrocious behavior of Gina Carano online. The Mandalorian actress used her Twitter account to promote voter fraud propaganda, conspiracy theories, transphobia, and then used Instagram stories to suggest being a MAGA supporter was like being Jewish in Nazi Germany. #FireGinaCarano was recurringly trending on Twitter, because many Star Wars fans who aren’t trash monsters were appalled by Carano’s bigotry and ignorance, and wondered how much more Disney and Lucasfilm would allow her to taint their brands. Well, she was finally canned yesterday...

This has nothing to do with freedom of speech. Carano is free to say whatever she wants. She’s not been arrested. The government has not silenced Carano. Hell, not even Twitter or Instagram has shut down her accounts. However, freedom from speech does not mean freedom from consequences. She’s been fired presumably because she was drawing a lot of bad attention to herself, and thereby The Mandalorian. Her canning was the consequence of her own actions, not because Disney and Lucas Films are bastions of liberal ideals but because they are companies that want to sell Baby Yoda toys without the distraction/drama Carano’s bilious rants bring.

This isn’t about Freedom of Speech, it’s about the Free Market. Conservatives supposedly LOVE the Free Market, but MAGA folk are still mad. They’re declaring Carano a martyr of “cancel culture.”

A number of people on the right today are arguing that Carano was fired because she’s conservative, but that’s not true, is it? Or maybe it is! She didn’t get fired for expressing traditional conservative opinions — austerity! military spending! anti-abortion! — she got fired for expressing transphobia, and for “denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities.”

Do Republicans now believe that “denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities” is conservatism?

She did that months ago. The straw that broke the camels back was comparing being conservative to being a Jewish person in the holocaust.

I know plenty of conservatives who denigrate "them qu**rs!" for the crime of being such.

I'm with Disney on this one. If actors choose to use the platform Disney helped them build to air controversial views, or demonstrate bad behavior, Disney is allowed to take their part of the platform back.

Entertainment companies can't succeed by annoying a significant fraction of its customers with social opinion having nothing to do with its content. I think she got a lot of leeway under the circumstances.

Sucks for her. Daughter and I discussed this earlier.

I don't like being fired for ones thoughts or words that are NOT related to ones job.

I call bullshit. When you become a public figure, you accept that there are consequences for what you say in public.

Celebrity doesn't mean immunity. If you were working at a law firm, or were a manager at the local Best Buy, you wouldn't be allowed to post these things openly without consequences.

I'm not sure why we should extend special protections to folks in Hollywood.

Own your words. This is good advice for everyone, but especially now, it should apply to EVERYONE.

IMHO actors should not have social media accounts unless they can afford a 3rd party to run them.
