For pick-up, Uber uses GPS to locate your location. No need to enter your exact address or location or cross streets. So helpful when you're at a mall entrance, airport terminal, or unfamiliar location where there are no street signs right in front of you. Uber will find you for pick-up.
But like everything using GPS, it can be off by quite a bit, so be sure to verify that it locates you correctly.
Also, you can see the car on the map in real time (with a bit of a delay), but the driver can't see your live location unless you enable that feature (which I don't necessarily recommend). Where ever that pin is initially dropped is all the driver gets.
Looking on the real time map, the GPS location is within 20 feet during the times I've used it. Precise enough for the driver to know what side of the street you are on. It's always helpful to give the driver a wave and a nod while s/he approaches. And if for some reason you can't find each other, the driver will pull over and give you a call. "I'm wearing a blue jacket, standing in front of the fire hydrant,,, Ohh I see you." type of convo.
