ICE vs. the Gestapo: A Comparison
leftvoice.org, 2019

It is not quite accurate to describe the Border Patrol as the American SS—the SS was a paramilitary formation of the most fanatical Nazis. For now, Trump does not command any personal storm troops. A better comparison would be to the Gestapo, the Geheime Staatspolizei (Secret State Police) that the Nazis created in 1933 when they took over and merged several Prussian police agencies. These police agencies had been built up by social democratic governments under the Weimar Republic in order to fight against the communists. The Nazis had little trouble reorienting them towards fascist ends. History has shown that police remain loyal to the capitalist state, even if a supposedly democratic government is replaced by a fascist one. As Leon Trotsky remarked at the time, “every policeman knows that though governments may change, the police remains.”...

...[speaking about USA] The massive deportation machine was built up by Democrats and Republicans together. ICE was founded only in 2003 with bipartisan support. Barack Obama deported more people than all previous U.S. presidents combined. Just recently [2019], the Democrats in congress voted to fund ICE with 4.5 billion additional dollars, guaranteeing their ability to keep more people in cages.

And for inflicting this misery, they got…oh, approximately zero cred or votes from xenophobic factions.

Dems should stop trying to act like the Right. It’s stupid and completely unproductive (or counter-productive) as a political strategy, despite what their well-paid consultants keep telling them.

Is there a two sentence reason I should not leave the country?

1) Because Immigration/Border Patrol/ICE may detain you without due process when you try to get back INTO the country, even if you claim citizenship or legal status.

2) They may go over you and your possessions with a jaundiced eye, and if they find anything suspicious or that they don't understand, there is no predicting where you might end up.
I meant as regards this video. Smile
Yeah, well it is more a harangue than an informational piece, and the guy fancies himself an influencer, I think, rather than an educator.

That being said, certain kinds of "appearance" are likely to affect re-entry more than they used to.

Back in the 1980s my US passport was stolen when I was living in Jerusalem and I had to get a replacement issued at the American Consulate. When I returned to the US I was questioned about this, and my copy of the Jerusalem Police Report seemed to satisfy the inspector.

I'm not sure I would get through so easily with a foreign-issued US passport today. Fortunately, I am white-presenting with very light skin and freckles; I am often mistaken for Irish, even though I'm not. An Irish appearance is taken as pretty benign these days, though a century ago it was not.
