To code both remotes I should be aiming them at the overhead unit. There is a key hole to one side of the garage. The previous owner must have thought of a preventive measure already. However, we don't have the key to it. So next step would be either a keyless entry and/or a door.

I installed both an outdoor keypad and a key lock. The key lock is at the top of the garage door. When you use the key to unlock, the tumbler assembly which has a cable connected to the inside emergency unlock latch, comes out. Pull the lock/cable and it unlatches the lock. I would use this in case the electricity were to go out. These are available at any garage door store.

I have a similar setup at my home.
We have a keypad attached as well as the openers. Our system will start letting you know the battery life of the remotes etc as well by blinking the keypad after the door starts opening. Others do similar things as well. 3P
