I wish our driveway were made of asphalt, not concrete

There are 2 kinds of concrete:

Concrete that is cracked
Concrete that hasn't cracked yet

sounds like your contractor friend doesn't know any good concrete men. There are lots of options for high strength pre-stressed fiber reinforced concrete. A friend has an oversized 4 car garage with a slab poured in one piece. Pre-stressed and reinforced with long strand glass fibers. 2 other friends who are mechanical engineers who specialize in materials gave it the two thumbs up before the pour was done. been a decade so far.

Cutting through a concrete driveway wouldn't be an easy task.
I've seen that fix on different driveways & thought it was just a decorative thing old men with time on their hands do.

I've heard that concrete comment before from a man who pumps the stuff.

Racer is correct. We have poured tons of 'crete in the factories and if done right, you'll have a tough time finding any cracks. On some jobs, we have sandbagged the pour and flooded with water to insure a slower cure. Lots of steel, rerod, mesh, pins also contribute to a solid slab. There are so many variables in a concrete pour - it's not just a matter of forming it up and calling a truck.
