Shared Experience? What is that supposed to mean? That certainly is not a definition of "race".

My adopted father was 1/32 Cherokee, but he sure as heck wasn't native american.

Now, is it fitting that innaguration day is MLK day that year, and he has been a champion for human rights since the earliest days of his political career, and even before? If that's the case, yes.

I do know that he and his "advisors" have been vocally and his advisors sometimes violently, trying to erode and take away rights guaranteed by the constitution for the perceived greater good.

I think black people "are" laying claim to him. Obama prepared for this however. If you check out some of his appearances vis a vis the African American community, you will notice that one of his mantras is to minimize and reduce their expectations regarding what "he" can deliver as a sitting president specifically. I don't really think they "hear" that right now however. Consequently, I think it's possible for him to lose them somewhat over time. I remember when Tom Bradley first won for mayor of Los Angeles. The initial expectations of black people were diminished as they discovered that he didn't have nearly enough power to dramatically change the South Central economic landscapes overnight, and to deal with the fact that he was the mayor for "all" of Los Angeles.

Whether you see it that way or not both terms are pejorative and indicate an inability to communicate or a desire to confront. How words are used is often more important than their actual definition.
