You'd only see 600W power consumption when the entire screen is lit up with white pixels - how often does that happen? Typical usage is more like 300W +/- some.

OK, go turn on 3 100 watt incandescents just for a little "background lighting", and leave 'em on for 5 hours, and then fall asleep with them on now and then . . .
Watch less TV.

Using a Kill-A-Watt, this guy found his plasma TV uses around 170W:

A far cry from 600W.
