I picked up a new hdmi cable at radio shake. Damn thing cost me $50!!! That was the least expensive one they had too. If it fixes the sound problem when using hdmi I guess it will be worth it.
first, sorry about striking though your original post. i just wanted to make clear which test I would disregard in troubleshooting this problem. It wasn't meant to be like a teacher grading someone's homework. I was typing really fast as I was having breakfast and I was supposed to take a shower and get to work at 8 :00 AM (and it was 7:12 when I posted). I was in a hurry and didn't have time to elaborate any further.
I don't know much about HDMI cable, but I think it only carries digital signals, and as long as the connection is good, there is no point to worry about signal degradation and impedances and back reflections like it was the case with analog cables (where quality does matter, but MONSTER is overpriced by the way).
Then I went downstairs and played the same song on another appletv connected to a tv using hdmi and then to another accuphase amp using standard audio inputs. No distortion at all.
I would probably do all the troubleshooting here since you know the HDMI cable, TV and accuphase are all working fine. Just swap Apple TVs and see which one works and which one does not.
EDIT: again, sorry I don't have time to spell check. I need to get home after a long day at work.
