Sucking data from a Powermac 7300 hard drive

Many thanks to you all for offering solutions. I have a SCSI to USB adapter and I have a compatible CD burner as well as an ethernet crossover cable. As soon as I have time I will go at it and find which way works best.

You don't need a crossover ethernet cable with modern Macs. They can autosense whether you are using a straight or crossover cable. So either kind will likely work if you plan to connect the old Mac to a reasonably current one.

I am surprised that there are SCSI to USB adapters. There have been discussions here in the past about USB to FireWire adapters, with the conclusion that they would almost require a computer to make them work. I thought SCSI and FireWire had some of the same "genetic material" so could be made to work together. But USB depends on the host computer to manage traffic, which I understood got in the way of making it easy to adapt USB to FW. Hence surprise that SCSI and USB can be adapted.

I think you're right, Winston, I see both my SCSI connectors are male, and so is the one I want to connect it to, both on the bare drive and on the back of the old 7300.

Guess I'll have to try the other ideas.
