Just got out of a CompSci class in college when I heard. Very sad day.
Next week will be the anniversary of Columbia's accident. I remember sitting at the kitchen table wondering when we were going to hear the sonic boom when my wife went into the bedroom and turned on the TV and heard that they had just lost contact with it. Another very sad day.

Was teaching a programming class and at the break saw a TV set running the live NASA feed. All I saw was the exhaust trail, but thought "that's not good".
Sigh

Sophomore year in college, in one of my Biology core courses. I'd have to look up the course name, but I remember the professor (my advisor). He opened with the announcement.

Was rehabbing our first house in Chicago. I was getting the wood-burner going because it was quite cold out. We just had a radio on.

Snow day in Atlanta. I was in 10th grade and at my best friend's house with another friend. I was upstairs playing on his little brother's Apple //c and then started yelling for me to come down. I didn't believe them at first, but we spent the rest of the afternoon watching news coverage. I believe I still have the Time magazine with it on the cover.

I was teaching a class. One of my colleagues came into my classroom and asked for my office keys. I tossed them to him and he left. After class I found a dozen people in my office looking at a 5" black and white tv that I had gotten for going to a timeshare presentation watching it blow up over and over and over.
