Unanswered Questions about Final Cut Pro X

Wow. I'm simply amazed at some of that. No support for previous formats at this time, everything is stuck in one window - and that's something I loved about the Mac OS and not about Windows (at least 9x-XP). No setting cue in/out points when capturing from tape. "Events" is the only way to organize media - that's incredibly horrible. No multicam editing - that's incredibly messed up. My wife has a project that is in multicam, but we haven't purchased FCP yet because we knew v.X was coming out... but now we'll have to buy an older version or wait for X.1 or something like that.

Wow. I expect this sort of stuff from Microsoft, but not from Apple.

It's been a while since I was involved in this sort of workflow, but from what I read this sounds a bit disastrous at the professional level.

No multicam editing could definitely be a deal breaker for my office as well. Not sure what kind of support there is for that in Premiere, but since we have the CS5 collection switching over may be in our future. Unless of course there is a reasonable workaround...

It seems like they're killing off one of the best pro apps they've ever had and replacing it with a prosumer app.

It sounds like the best idea might be to wait until the dust settles. Not everybody is pessimistic.

Larry Jordan, a FCP trainer, seems pretty enthused,
" I think that within the next 18 months virtually all of us will be running FCP X and wondering how we lived without it.

It’s that good."

He concedes it's not perfect, but he's not throwing around descriptions like disastrous or feeling like Apple has killed off FCP.

And I'm sure he'd like to devote some time to telling you why. If I hoped to participate in highly budgeted, professional production, removing OMF and EDLs seems a bit disastrous to me. Perhaps in the last few years they have replaced these elements, but if they haven't, I wouldn't be able to work with this new version.

Interesting, because he also went on record saying FCP X is "not ready for professional use":

So, in a nutshell, these are some of the drawbacks (some may overlap with those already posted):

no import of FCP 6 or 7 projects (as of now, may come later)
no tape-based I/O
no source/record windows - single window app
one sequence per project
no multi-cam (as of now, may come later)
no OMF export
no EDL or XML support
no 3rd party hardware support
no 3rd party plug-in support

hmmm, not sounding overly promising...
