Yeah, that is why some organizations in various locations will arrange for volunteer "house sitters" for families attending funerals. Does cut down on the opportunistic thieves who use this approach.
Yes. My parents' synagogue provides volunteer house sitters for this purpose.

We always have someone house sit at the home of the deceased during visitation and the funeral. Also
never put the address in the Obit. I still see people doing that. Recently a 2 yo drowned here in the county
and the neighbors broke in and robbed the house while they were at the funeral. Morans even stole some
of the child's toys and let their kids play with them outside, bingo they had them hook, line and sinker. It
doesn't hurt that my SIL's nephew is a Police Officer and is more than glad to help out when he can.
When crooks get smarter I guess they'll start hitting the homes of close relatives.
